Analysis of James Blunt's "You're Beautiful" |
The rather haunting way this song is sung can make it addictive. Just ask anyone in the U.K., U.S., Ireland, The Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden or Canada where the song went to #1 on the charts. Despite its special beauty, we were rather perplexed by the lyrics. They just didn't seem to make complete sense. Not that every song has to make sense, but we just couldn't get the flow of this bugger.
So we decided to take a closer peek.

"YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL" LYRICS |
|
THOUGHTS & QUESTIONS |
|
My life is brilliant.
My love is pure.
I saw an angel.
Of that I'm sure.
She smiled at me on the subway.
She was with another man.
But I won't lose no sleep on that,
'Cause I've got a plan. |
Ok, so far we know the guy is down with life. He's happy with where's he's at. Apparently, he sees a hotty on the subway, but he can't talk to her 'cause she's with another bloke. One thing's for sure though: he says he has a PLAN.
Hmm...a plan for what? To talk to her? To get rid of the boyfriend? To forget the hotty and get a latte? |
You're beautiful. You're beautiful.
You're beautiful, it's true.
I saw you face in a crowded place,
And I don't know what to do,
'Cause I'll never be with you.
|
He repeats that she's hot stuff several times. Then some self-doubt appears to creep in. He says he doesn't know what to do because he'll never be with her. Well, what the hell happened to THE PLAN, man? Ya, the plan in the 1st verse, damnit! |
Yeah, she caught my eye,
As we walked on by.
She could see from my face that I was,
Fucking high,
|
She saw him too and he looked high. But not just high, "f*cking high." These lyrics are from his own personal website, so don't think we are the ones dropping the f-bombs. Anyway, whether she saw that he was into her stuff, or whether she thought he looked like a heroin addict, we don't really know. |
And I don't think that I'll see her again,
But we shared a moment that will last till the end.
|
Again, he doubts he'll see her again, so THE PLAN mentioned in the first verse must be all but abandoned.
Must have been an intense moment they shared. What will it last to the end of? To the end of the subway ride? To the end of the day? To the end of life? If he just met her and said this, he might be in need of some meds. |
[ Chorus ]
You're beautiful. You're beautiful...
[...Blaa blaa blaa ]
|
We already went over this, yo. |
There must be an angel with a smile on her face,
When she thought up that I should be with you.
|
Woah, now this shizit is double heavy. He's bringin' in an angel! Now it's the angel who thought they should be together. Oh sure, blame it on an angel. Does the angel want him to steal the girl from her boyfriend? What kind of angel would endorse that? How do we know he's not just some perve reading waaaay too much into spying some hot chick on the subway. There must be more to this!
|
But it's time to face the truth,
I will never be with you. |
Is this self-defeat talking or has THE PLAN been dropped again. WTF?! We're lost!! |
|

So as you can see, there are several questions that this song poses if you are really listening. Or, maybe you don't give a rat's ass and you are just tuning into the "You're beautiful, you're beautiful...and I will never get to be with you" parts. Which most people probably are as they are thinking that this song is about seeing someone hella fine on a subway and not having the nerve to talk to them. 9 out of 10 dentists surveyed believe flouride prevents tooth decay, annnd they wouldn't have the nerve to talk to someone who caught their eye on public transportation even if their own teeth were whitened and flippin' perfect. So regular blokes like us probably don't have a shot either. |
Now that we've gone through our analysis, it's time for a trivia injection. Danceage.com has an interesting write up about the meaning behind the song that makes it all mo' sensical. Check it out:
|
"You're Beautiful" is about a former girlfriend of Blunt's. Blunt sees her on the subway with a new boyfriend, and although he believes that they could be together once again, he realizes that it will not happen as she has moved on and found new love. Two versions of the song exist, one with edited lyrics for radio play, the other having explicit lyrics which were released on Back to Bedlam and most of the "You're Beautiful" singles. James Blunt has released more than five different versions of this single. The album cover images differ, and some of them have the censored lyrics and some do not.
When asked about the song, Blunt responded, "It's probably one of the least meaningful songs on the album and by no means people's favourite. The album is like a book covering various aspects of life in a specific order."
It is assumed that the music video for "You're Beautiful" alludes to suicide. Blunt removes the upper portion of his clothing and places all of his personal belongings on the ground. At the end of the video, he jumps off a cliff and lands in the water while he sings the lyrics: "But it's time to face the truth, I will never be with you". However, it was never confirmed whether the media speculation was accurate or not. |
